Author Mark Sisson discusses his new book, "The Keto Reset Diet," and how the popular regimen can help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Ketogenic diets are exploding in popularity, particularly for those who want to get increased energy while losing weight. CNBC's Chrissy Farr tries it out, with the help of a new device called Keyto that tells the user if they are in ketosis.
Ketogenic dieting has become a favorite pastime of Silicon Valley techies who want to hack their bodies to improve energy levels and performance. The regimen involves eating foods that are high in fat and some protein, while keeping carbohydrates to a minimum.
The goal of ketogenic diets is to get body to a state calld "ketosis," which requires keeping carbohydrates to less than five percent of daily caloric intake. Once that happens, the body burns stored fats instead of recently eaten carbs, resulting in a buildup of acids called ketones within the body.
Some critics say "keto" is just another fad diet, like Atkins or Whole30, but others rave about the benefits of being in ketosis, ranging from weight loss to increased energy.
Ketones can actually be measured in the blood, the urine and the breath, which is how many people on the diet figure out if their carb restriction is having an impact. But measuring it through the blood or urine is a bit much for some.
So Keyto, a new start-up in the space, aims to make it easier for people on ketogenic diets to track their body's transition into ketosis by simply blowing into a device. It was founded by Ethan Weiss, a cardiologist at UC San Francisco, and former Weight Watchers vice president Ray Wu.

Keto is a low-carb, high-fat diet that switches your metabolism from burning glucose (sugar) to burning ketones (fat). Keto makes it easy to burn fat, lose weight, feel energized, and combat insulin resistance.
Your body has way more stored fat than stored sugar (glucose). The average person has 90-100,000 calories of stored fat, but only about 1,700 calories of stored sugar. If you run your body on fat, you can go longer without being hungry or craving carbs. Thatโs the big advantage of keto.
Low-fat and low-calorie diets are high in carbohydrates. But carbs prevent fat burning! People on these diets struggle to maintain a healthy weight. They have to exercise more and often only lose water weight. This is why 98 percent of diets fail.
Lowering your carbs to 20 to 50 grams per day causes you to go into ketosis. The lower your carbs, the more you get into ketosis and burn fat.
The ketogenic diet simplified:
โข Lower your carbs
โข Eat moderate protein
โข Get most of your calories from healthy fats
Many believe that a high-fat diet is unhealthy. But if you keep your carbs low, there are no risks associated with consuming healthy fats.
It takes three days to switch your bodyโs fuel source from sugar to fat, and you start burning your own body fat.
As soon as you consume too many carbs on other diets, your blood sugar drops and you become cranky and hungry all the time.
If you do healthy keto, youโll burn fat, eliminate hunger and cravings, increase energy, improve your cognitive function, and reduce inflammation.
My version of keto is called Healthy Keto. Healthy Keto is a low-carb plan with healthy ingredients and nutrient-dense foods. Always choose high-quality foods on your keto diet.
The purpose of getting into ketosis is to normalize your insulin levels. Nearly 80 percent of the population has a pre-diabetic condition called insulin resistance. This condition happens when your body canโt effectively process insulin, leading to health problems like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimerโs, and others.

SUMMARY
-When you follow the ketogenic diet, it becomes easier for your system to get access to your fat stores and burn them off. As a result, you lose weight incredibly fast.
-There are actually a few versions you can choose from depending on your preferences: standard ketogenic diet, cyclical ketogenic diet, targeted ketogenic diet, high-protein ketogenic diet.
-You should base the majority of your meals around these foods and ingredients: meat, fatty fish, pastured or omega-3 whole eggs, grass-fed butter and cream, unprocessed cheese, nuts and seeds, healthy oils, low-carb vegetables, healthy herbs and spices.
-As for the foods you should avoid under any circumstances, they are: sugary foods, fruits, grains or starches, beans or legumes, root vegetables and tubers, products labelled โlow-fatโ or โdietโ, unhealthy fat, alcohol.
-Use this 7-day ketogenic meal plan as a model to build your own plan. The good news is that you can have coffee, cupcakes, bacon, sausage and other things you probably love as long as you balance it all up.
-The biggest side effect is keto flu, the symptoms of which include poor energy and mental function, increased hunger, sleep issues, nausea, and digestive discomfort.
-This diet can decrease the risk of developing heart disease by stabilizing blood sugar and blood pressure levels as well as increasing the โgood cholesterolโ in your blood.
